The CENTER Goals

   

  1. Attain national and global recognition as a Center of Excellence for research, neighborhood planning and community development in distressed urban communities.
  2. Influence national and global development of scholarship on issues relating to distressed urban communities.
  3. Construct a Replicable Social Function Model of Neighborhood Development that can be used to transform the social, economic and physical dimensions of distressed urban communities in Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.
  4. Develop an efficient and effective framework which connects University resources (faculty, students and staff) to the regeneration of distressed communities across Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.
  5. Shape the development of public policies on neighborhood development in distressed urban communities across Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.
  6. Encourage the development of a regional higher education network of academic-based service learning and community service, which will focus on the transformation of distressed urban communities in Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis. 
  7. Establish partnerships with the City of Buffalo, the Community Action Organization of Erie County and the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority to reduce poverty and rebuild distressed urban communities in Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.

The CENTER Roles 

 

 

  •  Engages in neighborhood planning and community development activities with residents and stakeholders in select communities.
  •  Provides academic, analytical and technical support to distressed urban communities in Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.
  • Participates in research and practical activites to gain insight into the socioeconomic and health obstacles that hinder the development of distressed urban communities.
  • Trains urban planners that are committed to the challenge of redeveloping distressed urban communities and building urban regions based on socioeconomic and racial justice.
  •  Involves students in academic-based service learning and community service initiatives in distressed communities throughout Buffalo and the Western New York metropolis.
